NFL player arrested for speeding: what do you mean?

The rules of the road are full of rules, procedures and penalties for every type of offence. The fine for parking in the wrong direction, for missing a traffic light, or for turning where it shouldn’t be, tends to be the most common in the United States, or at least the most popular.

Nonetheless, “criminal speed” is not on this list. So, what does this type of offense while driving refer to and what consequences does it entail?

It was for this violation that a National Football League (NFL) player was arrested. This is Marchioness “Hollywood” Brown, wide receiver for the Arizona Cardinals, arrested in Arizona on this charge.

We usually know about speeding tickets and arrests, but the adjective “criminal” makes the situation more serious than it seems.

Depending on the state of the United States where the violation is committed, the speed limit for committing the violation will vary. In this case, Criminal speeding in Arizona is governed by three principles: driving over 85 miles per hour, driving 20 miles per hour in excess of the speed limit, or driving 35 miles per hour in a school zone.

Penalties can range from a fine, 30 days in jail, and even probation. Now, in the case of the NFL player, police reports show he was traveling at 126 mph in a 65 mph zone on State Route 101, according to 12News.

Detailing Brown’s situation is that there are no speeding tickets in Arizona, so in theory the sanction that he will receive will be more serious than a blow to the pocket. The 2022-2023 NFL season begins September 8, and given the wide receiver situation, his debut on the team is in doubt.

It was the Arizona Cardinals who issued a statement claiming to be aware of the situation. “We are aware of the Hollywood Brown situation and have reported it to the NFL office as required.”

Finally, there is a positive factor behind the player’s mistake: he has no criminal record, which is likely to dictate a light sentence with a warning about repeated traffic violations.
