Toyota still not convinced of the need to produce electric vehicles: why

Electrification will be mandatory, there is no doubt about it. The measure puts car manufacturers in a difficult and tricky position as they will have to produce only electric cars in a few years.

Of course, Toyota will be one of them, which has committed to participating in the transition from fossil fuels to electrification. Nonetheless, the commitment and need to embrace these changes does not blind Akio Toyoda, The CEO of an Asian brand on the challenges of this change.

The recognized brand of the automotive market claims that the introduction of electric vehicles will not be as simple and easy as some regulators suggest. An example of this is California, the first state to ban the sale of new non-electrified vehicles by 2035.

Toyoda cited a number of factors that need to be improved for the change to be effective, among which he highlighted mainly the high cost of cars and the lack of infrastructure for charging.

“Like the free autonomous cars we should all be driving now, it will take longer for electric vehicles to become mainstream than the media wants us to believe,” the Toyota CEO says, according to media reports. CNBC.

Toyota mentality

Toyota wants to please all customers equally, create multiple options and remain strong in the automotive market.

“(The goal) remains the same – to please the widest possible range of customers with the widest possible variety of powertrains”Toyoda remarked.

Of course, the company’s range of offerings includes hybrid and plug-in hybrid powertrains like the Toyota Prius, hydrogen fuel cell vehicles like the Toyota Mirai, and 15 more all-electric models by 2025.

Toyota plans

Even though Toyota is not completely convinced about electric vehicles, Toyota hopes to achieve zero carbon neutrality in 2050. However, the company claims that its efforts to reduce CO2 emissions started not recently, but since 1997, when it launched the Prius.

The Asian company claims to have sold more than 20 million electric vehicles worldwide, avoiding the spread of 160 million tons of carbon dioxide.
