Utility performance of electric vehicles: Japan picks the best cars of 2022 (photo)

For the first time in the history of the Japan Car of the Year award, two models have won simultaneously. Electric vehicles predominate among the candidates.

The winners of the Japanese Car of the Year competition have been announced. For the first time in its history, it was an electric car that won. This was reported on the official website of the award.

To be more precise, there are two winners this year – twin models Nissan Sakura and Mitsubishi eK Cross EV. Compact city electric cars were ahead of the new Honda Civic and Toyota Crown in the voting. In total, 11 models remained to the final voting.

Electric vehicles also won in a number of other categories. Thus, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 electric car became the best imported car and received the BMW iX electric crossover design award.

The most technologically advanced car of the year was recognized as the Nissan X-Trail crossover with an economical e-Power hybrid setup. Among sports cars, the new Honda Civic Type R won, in the class of compact urban models the same Nissan Sakura and Mitsubishi eK Cross EV prevailed.

The Car of the Year competition in Japan has been held since 1980. The best cars of the year are chosen by a jury of 60 Japanese auto journalists. Last year’s winner was the Nissan Note minivan.
