The 2022 SEMA Show took place a few weeks ago, but it still continues to showcase everything new that has been revealed there by various brands, among which Volkswagen stands out with the Jetta GLI Performance Concept.
This concept was on display in the North Hall of the Las Vegas, Nevada show, demonstrating a link to the past, history and precision of the original Jetta GLI, first introduced in 1984.
Commonly referred to as the “GTI with a trunk” for generations, it has gained experience and recognition in the automotive market year after year over its nearly four decades of existence.
More than a concept, a tribute
A little trip to the past. The Volkswagen Design Center team in California took the historic characteristics of the GLI to take the car’s design to the next level by completely redesigning the exterior as well as the core elements of the Jetta GLI.
Standing out among the most standout features and performance is its production based on the 2022 Jetta GLI Autobahn with a six-speed manual transmission, with the addition of wider front and rear fenders than the original (0.8 inches), which feature rear air vents.
Mechanically, it was built from Volkswagen EA88 Gen 3 engine, which boasts the addition of a performance package based on the RacingLine IS38 turbo engine. In addition, it adds an R600 carbon fiber cold air intake, a high performance intercooler, an oil management kit and an oil cooler.
Thus, the Volkswagen Jetta GLI Performance concept is able to provide 350 horsepower and 372 lb-ft of torquefar surpassing the original model’s 228 horsepower and 258 linear lb-ft of torque.
In addition, RacingLine has added a large brake kit with Stage 3+ six-piston forged calipers, a TrackSport suspension kit with spring and rear shock, “thick-bar” inverted front shock, Lightweight aluminum, 2.4″ linear springs with fully adjustable assistants and strong shock absorbers. .
“This car gave our team the opportunity to use our passion for motorsport and create an image that is even more expressive and exciting than a production car. Wide body design lends this GLI concept the pose that every enthusiast dreams of and a graphic treatment that highlights its more aggressive character while incorporating classic GLI elements,” said Reto Brun, senior director at the Volkswagen Design Center in California, in an official press release from the German brand.
