What is a camshaft and how does it work?

treecamshaft – a mechanical component of an internal combustion engine which is responsible for controlling the opening and closing of the intake and exhaust valves in the cylinder, which acts as a critical component in the engine management system as it directly affects engine performance, fuel consumption and emissions.

It consists of several elements: a camshaft, cams and drive rods. The first is a metal element that rotates with the engine, the second is the components that are located at the end of the shaft and control the movement of the valves.

Finally, the drive rods are the components that connect the cams to the valve control mechanisms, which are usually the cylinder head or cylinder head box.

In addition, this component has a series of intake and exhaust valve cams synchronized with the engine piston and crankshaft to ensure they open and close at the right time in the combustion cycle.

The camshaft may also have a timing cam that helps synchronize the movement of the intake and exhaust valve cams.

Similarly, it must be emphasized that it is a critical element in engines as it regulates the flow of air and exhaust gases in the cylinder. If the camshaft is not timed correctly or damaged, it can cause engine performance problems such as loss of power, increased fuel consumption and emissions problems.

Because of this, it is extremely important to keep the camshaft in good condition and keep it in sync to keep the engine running properly.
