The Toyota Camry has gained immense popularity outside of Japan, but domestic sales are falling every year. All subsequent generations of the model will be sold only in markets where it is in demand.
Toyota plans to stop selling the Camry sedan in the Japanese market due to low demand for the model. This was reported on the Nikkei Asia website.
The Toyota Camry will continue to be sold in countries where the sedan is still competitive. Japanese dealers have already received notice to stop production of the model for domestic customers. It will be replaced by the Toyota Crown off-road sedan.
Toyota has already stopped accepting most new orders for the sedan. At the same time, the model will not receive a successor in Japan, but will be sold only in foreign markets.
The car is mainly produced at the Tsutsumi plant in the United States, China and Japan’s Aichi prefecture. Like the Corolla, the Camry is Toyota’s global strategic vehicle.
In total, over its 43-year history, the Toyota Camry has sold about 1.3 million copies in Japan. In the domestic market, the model was priced between 3.49 and 4.68 million yen (from 26,400 to 35,450 dollars).
The model is currently sold in more than 100 countries and by the end of 2022, more than 21 million have been purchased. The current tenth-generation sedan debuted in 2017.
