Tesla’s use of artificial intelligence in its electric vehicles will be improved with a new software update, CEO Elon Musk said.
While Tesla is known around the world for its investment in artificial intelligence for autonomous driving technologies, the automaker is also using its expertise in automation and other areas of artificial intelligence to develop new features related to the operation of its vehicles.
Unlike other manufacturers that use a rain and snow sensor to detect its intensity to activate automatic wipers, Tesla is testing its computer vision system by using its cameras to improve the automatism and operation of the wipers.
New technologies
Now, the automaker has created a Deep Rain neural network to do the job better. Now Musk is driving the growth of Tesla’s computer vision capabilities with a new Full Self-Driving Beta update.
In fact, a few months ago, the CEO joked that Tesla would go full vision and not even rely on its car radar system.
“When radar and sight do not match, which one do you believe? Vision is much more precise, so double vision is better than sensor fusion,” explains Musk.
“Sensors are a stream of bits, and cameras are several orders of magnitude more bits per second than radar (or lidar). The radar must significantly increase the signal/noise of the bitstream to justify the complexity of its integration. As image processing improves, radar is far behind,” he added.
Although everything looks futuristic when it comes to the use of autonomous driving, we cannot ignore the fact that the person driving the car is still responsible for the vehicle, so he must be attentive to be ready for any surprises.
