Electric stallion: test drive the new Ford Mustang Mach-E

The Ford Mustang Mach-E electric car was unveiled in Ukraine in its top sports GT version with 487 horsepower. Focus I met the crossover and tried to determine if it was a real Mustang.

Ford Mustang is the American brand’s most iconic model and the most popular sports car of all time. More than 10 million coupes and cabriolets have been produced over 60 years. It is not surprising that Ford decided to use a well-known name for a fashionable electric model, so for several years the “herd” was replenished – the Ford Mustang Mach-E crossover appeared. It entered the Ukrainian market this year and was recently tested Focus.

Familiar but different: The design of the Ford Mustang Mach-E

Although the new Ford Mustang Mach-E is a model belonging to a completely different class, it still borrows not only its name but also some relevant features from its famous sibling. The long hood, rectangular headlights and plastic insert in the form of the radiator grille make it clear that this is a Mustang, albeit a crossover.

The silhouette of the electric car, with a curved roof and a pointed rear end with characteristic three-section lights, is also designed in the style of the two-door Ford Mustang. He may not be a thoroughbred stallion, but he still tries to emphasize that he belongs to the Mustang family.

The charged GT version also features the signature Grabber Blue color seen on the Ford Mustang palette in 1969. In this color, the crossover is especially impressive and immediately attracts the attention of others – it has even been photographed by passers-by. Additionally, this lowered version has a more aggressive front end, body kit and 20-inch wheels.

Ford Mustang Mach-E electric car uses GE1 architecture. It is created on the basis of the C2 platform, that is, the electric car’s distant relatives are the Ford Focus and Kuga.

To enter the cabin, we press the button on the doors because the Ford Mustang Mach-E does not have traditional door handles. However, there is a combination lock that allows you to lock the car without a key. Small arms are mounted inside. When the doors open, the Mustang logo flashes on the road.

The interior trim of the GT version uses high-quality perforated eco leather, Alcantara and aluminum. However, there are hard plastics in some places.

Ford Mustang Mach-E received a round joystick instead of the traditional gear lever. Device readings are displayed on a narrow screen. Its graphics are simple but the information is easy to read.

But the central screen is very large – 15 inches diagonally. The SYNC 4 multimedia system left a pleasant impression – it works quickly, its menu is clear, wireless Android Auto is stable and the connection does not break.

However, the air conditioning or heated seats need to be controlled via the touch screen. Only one physical volume button remains.

There are enough compartments for small items in the cabin – a medium-sized glove compartment, a two-level center console with wireless charging for smartphones and a large box with a special niche for a key fob in the armrest. Additionally, the Ford Mustang Mach-E has four USB ports.

Enough space

I sit in the driver’s seat and quickly find a comfortable position thanks to the wide range of adjustments for the steering column and seat (electrically adjustable in the basic version). The driving position is quite low by crossover standards. Visibility is far from ideal, as the car has a high window line and a small rear window. But versatile cameras come to the rescue.

But the seats in the Ford Mustang Mach-E GT are exemplary. The design of the backrests provides excellent support not only for the lower back but also for the shoulders. At the same time, these sports seats are comfortable. Of course there is heating too.

Let’s move on to the second row, and here the Ford Mustang crossover encounters pleasant surprises. Despite the curved roof in the rear, there is enough headroom for passengers up to 185 cm tall and legs are not cramped. The sofa cushion is designed for two seats, but the interior is roomy enough for three adults.

However, it cannot be said that the trunk is too large for these dimensions: its volume is 402 liters in normal condition and 1420 liters with the rear seats folded. Its doors are equipped with an electric drive with an opening sensor.

The floor is made of two levels, and a small partition is hidden under it. But there is no spare wheel here. However, there is an 81-litre front trunk where you can, for example, store the charging cable.

Only richly equipped versions of the new Ford Mustang Mach-E in Ukraine are available. All cars received keyless entry, power accessories, panoramic roof, dual-zone climate control, cameras, heating, parking assistant, Bang&Olufsen acoustics with 10 speakers, rain and light sensors.

Additionally, all Mustang Mach-Es received the Ford Co-Pilot 360 Assist safety suite: adaptive cruise control, automatic braking, lane keeping, blind spot monitoring and traffic sign recognition.

Accelerate like a sports car

The Ford Mustang Mach-E electric car in Ukraine is offered in 294-horsepower versions with rear-wheel drive and 351 and 487-horsepower versions with all-wheel drive. With. The most powerful is the GT variant.

It is noteworthy that the gasoline Ford Mustang GT received a 5.0-liter V8 with exactly the same power (487 hp). However, the electric car has a trump card; A huge torque of 830 N∙m is available from the first revs. Of course, the engines cannot be heard, but if you wish, you can activate a program that simulates the sound of a gasoline eight.

Even the American eight does not provide such traction, and thanks to this, the rather heavy (2273 kg) Ford Mustang Mach-E crossover accelerates to hundreds in the same 4.4 seconds as a light gasoline coupe.

This result can be achieved in Wild sports mode. When you start suddenly your back is literally pressed into the seat. Interestingly, even acceleration continues up to 140-150 km/h, although in many electric cars the dynamics deteriorate sharply at high speeds. Maximum speed is limited to 200 km/h.

Ford Mustang Mach-E series

The new Ford Mustang Mach-E GT is equipped with a 98 kWh battery. The declared range is 500 km (according to the WLTP cycle). This figure is quite realistic, considering that during testing during quiet driving (in Whisper mode) energy consumption dropped to 13-15 kWh per 100 km.

However, if you drive actively, energy consumption increases significantly. On the highway they reach 19-21 kWh per 100 km. However, even in this case, it is guaranteed to travel at least 400 km without charging.

You can charge a Ford Mustang electric car with alternating current in less than 10 hours. DC fast charging (150 kW) takes 45 minutes to reach 80%. Charging connector – CCS Combo 2.

How does the Ford Mustang Mach-E GT work?

Of course, the new Ford Mustang Mach-E GT is not as maneuverable as a coupe, but it handles very well by crossover standards. The steering is quite precise and in Untamed mode it fills with weight and becomes sharper.

Thanks to the traction vector and low center of gravity (due to the battery at the bottom), the electric car feels good on winding roads. There’s surprisingly little body roll, and there’s little point in understeer.

However, in Untamed mode the adaptive suspension becomes stiffer. The ride is quite firm and with the 20-inch wheels major road imperfections are noticeable. In addition, it is worth considering that the ground clearance of the Ford Mustang Mach-E GT is small – only 130 mm (in the standard version – 147 mm).

Although the electric Ford Mustang is generally quiet, the underbody could use a little more sound deadening. Thanks to the laminated glass, almost no aerodynamic noise occurs even at high speed.

Brembo brakes make a pleasant impression – they confidently slow down heavy electric crossover. They’re a little harsh at low speeds, but there’s regenerative braking that allows you to slow down more smoothly and recharge the battery. If necessary, you can select the “one pedal” mode and not press the brake pedal at all, because the vehicle slows down significantly when you release the gas.

The price of the 294-horsepower basic version of the new Ford Mustang Mach-E starts from 2,276,499 hryvnia. All-wheel drive version with 351 hp. It will cost 2,452,517 Hryvnias and the top GT will cost 3,076,215 Hryvnias.

Of course, the Mach-E electric car cannot replace the gasoline-powered Ford Mustang, but it could also be a pleasant surprise. And we’re not just talking about Mustang styling. The crossover is fast and handles well, while also being much more practical and roomy than a coupe or convertible. This is the Ford Mustang of the new electric age.
