A pregnant woman who was about to give birth could not start her car while the system was being updated. In pain, she took a taxi to the hospital where she had an emergency C-section.
A man from China’s eastern Shandong province said his wife discovered during labor that their Li Auto SUV, valued at more than $40,000, required 51 minutes of over-the-air updates and would not start during the process. South China Morning Post writes about this case.
The man, who wished to remain anonymous, explained that he had accidentally activated a suggested update on the vehicle’s system screen.
When he called customer service to cancel the update, he was told that it was no longer possible to stop it. For this reason, while the couple had to look for a taxi, the woman experienced terrible pain due to the enlargement of her cervix.
The man stated that his wife’s emotional distress and fast walking caused the fetus’s heartbeat to increase, so the hospital performed an emergency cesarean section on the woman, and that his wife and newborn daughter were now safe.
As stated in the publication, the incident quickly gained widespread publicity on social networks, collecting millions of views.
“This is clearly the husband’s fault. He panicked and pressed the wrong button to confirm the update! Now he’s blaming the car company for his mistake,” says one Internet user.
“Once the car system upgrade starts, it cannot be stopped. This is illogical; it does not take into account any emergencies that car owners may face,” another chimed in.
The author himself also stated that he did not believe that the problem was hidden in his car, thus only documenting the current strange situation.
Li Auto company itself reported that this case is being investigated. The spokesperson explained that vehicle owners were notified before the update and could choose to schedule the update immediately or postpone it. Once the update starts, it cannot be stopped for security reasons. However, the company did not say whether it would offer compensation to the “victims”.
Lawyers say the automaker may not be held liable in the case, but the couple may seek compensation for economic losses such as taxi costs.
Meanwhile, as a result of the Car of the Year competition in Japan, the best car of the year in Japan was the Honda minivan. The winner was chosen from 31 entries.
Let us remind you that experts determine the 5- and 10-year operating maintenance costs of cars of different brands. They interviewed vehicle owners and calculated maintenance and repair costs.
