The US spent less money on the war in Ukraine in a year than in Afghanistan or Iran – analysts (infographics)

According to experts from the Kiel Institute of World Economy, support for Kiev follows the same principle: Europe catches up, while the US sets the pace. Germany is the country that supports the Ukrainians the most among the EU countries.

During the war year, the United States spent more money on supporting Ukraine – it was the Americans who determined the pace of aid. Germany occupies a leading position among European countries. This was reported at the Kiel Institute for the World Economy.

German analysts created the Ukraine Support Track. This tracker counted the military, financial and humanitarian aid to Ukraine from January 24, 2022 to January 15, 2023. Statistics include 40 countries: European Union, G7, Australia, South Korea, Turkey, Norway, New Zealand, Switzerland, China, Taiwan and India. The database combines information from official and government sources with media reports for a scoreboard.

According to German experts, the foreign support that Ukraine receives from the all-out invasion of the Russian Federation is based on one principle: the United States sets the pace and Europe catches up.

In December, Americans allocated more than 73 billion euros to aid Ukraine, and Europeans about 55 billion euros. The country promised the same amount of humanitarian aid as throughout the year, but the share of financial and military support has increased. The tank deliveries announced after the Ramstein-8 contact group meeting on January 20 were not taken into account by the experts.

Between November 21 and January 15, the United States delivered the largest promised aid to Ukraine at 36.7 billion euros, most of which was military support. The following countries also took the lead:

  • The UK has pledged more than 1 billion euros in aid;
  • France — €565 million;
  • Japan — €472 million

“The Americans set the pace to support Ukraine. The hesitation of Europe in the first year of the war is surprising, especially since financial resources can be mobilized quickly. This is evidenced, for example, by the large amount of funds mobilized by EU governments to mitigate the shock from energy prices at home,” said the scout Its developer is Christophe Trebesh.

Experts said that Germany has allocated 264 billion euros in subsidies from January 2022 due to the sharp rise in energy prices for consumers and businesses. At the same time, the Germans allocated €6.15 billion for bilateral support to Ukraine and €7.2 billion for support through the EU.

In the summer, Germany allocated about 6 billion Euros for bilateral assistance to Ukraine and 5.65 billion Euros for transport costs. The Germans are ready to spend much more on a special fund – 100 billion euros – for their armed forces.

German analysts also compared aid to Ukraine with previous historical experience. The results showed that the expenditures of the Ukrainian allies were lower than in previous conflicts. Experts measured the support for Ukrainians as a percentage of the GDP of the countries concerned, and it turned out that the US spends more money on Afghanistan or Iran in a year. The Germans allocated more money to support the Allies in the Gulf War.

Recall, on February 26, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz reacted to the words of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky about insufficient aid. “There is no point in making fun of the size of German participation. It is unreasonable to continually reject such a large commitment,” said the German.

From the results of the surveys published on the KIIS website on February 23, it was learned that the majority of Ukrainians are striving for the country’s accession to the European Union by 2030. Also, statistics showed that after the full-scale invasion, Ukrainians began to speak the state language more often and donate to the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
