Ukrainians were promised new prices for onions: how much will a popular vegetable cost?

The price of onions in Ukrainian markets and stores continues to rise. Experts predict that the cost will rise at least until the end of spring, and only then will prices begin to fall.

Although onion imports to Ukraine increased 2.5 times in February compared to January, the cost of onions may increase by another 30% until May 2023. This was stated in the broadcast of the telethon by Maxim Gopka, analyst of the Ukrainian agribusiness club.

He announced that the demand for onions will decrease somewhat until the end of spring, as Ukrainians will grow onions in their summer houses. When the demand decreases, the price will also decrease.

“Now the price of onions is between 52 and 58 UAH/kg. Elsewhere I think a 30% price increase for these products will definitely happen before the beginning of May,” said Maxim Gopka.

At the same time, according to Maxim Gopka, the increase in onion prices is not only seen in Ukraine. For example, in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan, where onions are mainly supplied to Europe and Ukraine, exports are suspended due to overdose. This has become one of the important factors in increasing the cost of the product in our country.

By the way, according to the data of the Ministry of Finance, the cost of onions in some supermarket chains as of Friday, March 3, 2023:

  • Auchan — 53.60 UAH/kg;
  • Metro — 54.90 UAH/kg;
  • Novus — 43.89 UAH/kg;
  • Varus — 47.20 UAH/kg;
  • Megamarket — 69.90 UAH/kg.

What happens to onion prices?

At the beginning of 2023, onion prices increased by an average of four times compared to last year’s figures. So, in the Ukrainian market and stores in early February, onions were traded at 30-35 UAH per kg.

According to analysts of the EastFruit project, the price tag of 35 hryvnia per kilogram is a record price tag in the history of Ukraine’s independence. At the same time, the high cost of onions is predicted to continue due to constant power cuts and overspending.

“Today, market participants are already talking about the shortage of supply of these products in the Ukrainian market. At the same time, you should not rely on the supply of imported onions, because most Central Asian countries have significantly reduced the supply of these products. To foreign markets, ”said EastFruit.

Previously Focus He said that in 2022, the real wages of Ukrainians decreased by 16%, but their nominal income increased slightly. In 2023, the income situation is expected to improve slightly, but to improve.

Moreover Focus He wrote that analysts compared the salaries of Ukrainians and Poles in the 10 most popular open positions. It turned out that the difference in payments is several tens of thousands of hryvnia.
