According to the head of the organization, Rafael Grossi, the implementation of this initiative will lead to a large accumulation of weapons outside the region.
Plans to create a demilitarized zone around the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant in Energodar were canceled. This was expressed by Rafael Grossi, president of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), at a seminar held at the American civil society Council on Foreign Relations on March 22.
According to him, this issue is no longer considered because it is difficult to make it a reality. He noted that there will be a large build-up of weapons around the demilitarized zone.
In addition, Grossi noted that the implementation of this initiative will mean the legitimization of Russian troops on the territory of the Zaporozhye region by the organization.
“We are well aware of what additional challenges this will bring, especially in the area of active hostilities. It will be extremely difficult to carry out the verification process – after more than a kilometer from the demilitarized zone, the area will be heavily militarized. Therefore, we no longer think about it,” he said.
Rafael Grossi noted that the organization now has a different plan and will focus its efforts on the security of the ZNPP. He added that it is important that the nuclear power plant is not bombed and that its territory is not used for military operations.
Recall, on March 22, Grossi said that ZNPP can be removed from Ukraine’s energy system. According to him, the situation at the station is unstable, and there is a possibility of disconnecting the nuclear power plant from the last backup transmission line.
On March 15, the head of the IAEA announced that a “suitable solution” had been found to secure the ZNPP. He said he had been working on a proposal for several months to resolve the situation at the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant, but that it needed international support.
