Electricity tariffs in 2023: NEURC told Ukrainians when new prices will be offered

Ukrainians have been warned that a revision of electricity tariffs cannot be avoided, as energy companies need the funds needed to generate electricity in the face of infrastructure destruction.

The National Commission for State Regulation in the Fields of Energy and Utilities (NEURC) will announce new electricity tariffs to Ukrainians in late April or early May 2023. This was announced on the broadcast of the telethon on April 19 by the representative of the commission, Olga Babiy.

What about the new tariffs in Ukraine?

According to Olga Babiy, if the cost of one kilowatt hour for industrial consumers and enterprises is now 6 hryvnia, then the cost for the population will still be much lower. But prices will still continue to rise, as energy companies need the necessary funds to generate electricity in the face of infrastructure destruction.

Olga Babiy said, “The key factor in the realization of these processes is the availability of money to produce electricity. It is not produced from air. It is fuel, it is people’s salary.”

How much do Ukrainians pay for electricity now?

Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal announced in March 2023 that electricity tariffs would not change until the end of April.

“The PSO mechanism will work until April 30 this year. Thus, the price of electricity will not change until the end of the heating season,” said the head of government.

Therefore, now the tariff depends on the amount of kilowatts consumed:

  • 1.44 hryvnia per kilowatt hour for those consuming up to 250 kilowatt-hours;
  • 1.68 – more than 250 kilowatt-hours per month.

It should be noted that so far prices for household consumers in Ukraine have remained several times lower than the so-called market prices. But now, taking into account the damage to the energy system due to the attacks of the RF Armed Forces, the government is considering raising the existing tariff guarantee for the population. writes about it Focus In the article “Invoices are being updated. Electricity tariffs may increase from April”.

As Vladimir Omelchenko, director of energy programs at the Razumkov Center, explains, the government needs to think about whether the transition to market pricing will happen or whether electricity prices will continue to be regulated by the state.

“If Ukraine plans to join the European Union, then the state should urgently refuse to set electricity prices and switch to market pricing in the near future,” said Vladimir Omelchenko.

Previously Focus He said that in addition to raising electricity prices, NEURC plans to raise tariffs for centralized water supply and sanitation.
