Increasing wages: Why Ukrainians will start earning more in 2024

According to the State Labor Service, the right to index workers’ wages will be renewed in 2024, and the calculation of the consumer price index for indexing the cash income of the population will be carried out according to data on January 1.

Ukrainian employers are obliged to index their employees’ salaries according to the inflation rate, again according to the inflation rate. This was reported by the press service of the State Labor Service.

It is stated that the relevant rule is provided for in Article 39 of the Law “On the State Budget of Ukraine for 2024”. At the same time, the government allowed employers not to index workers’ wages in 2023.

According to the state budget law, the calculation of the consumer price index for indexing the monetary income of the population is carried out on an accrual basis from January 1, 2024.

“Thus, the right to index workers’ wages is renewed this year,” the state agency said in a statement.

How have Ukrainians’ salaries changed?

Starting from the beginning of 2024, employers in almost all major cities of Ukraine began to increase the salaries of their employees. Compared with December 2023, salaries increased the most among Kherson residents with an increase of 1.5 thousand hryvnia. Now they pay an average of 22.5 thousand hryvnia in the city.

Salaries also increased in other cities of Ukraine. For example:

  • in Rivne, where the recommended salary increased to 17.3 thousand hryvnias;
  • in Vinnitsa – 17 thousand hryvnia;
  • In Lutsk – 16.5 thousand hryvnia.

“Most employers are experiencing staff shortages, and in some specialties demand exceeds supply. In such a situation, businesses have to offer competitive wages to attract the best and retain staff to be competitive in the labor market,” he said.

Let us also remind you that economist Mikhail Kukhar believes that wages will reach the pre-war average level of $ 600 as of the second quarter of 2024. Meanwhile, the Council of Ministers predicts that by 2026, Ukrainians will earn 30 thousand hryvnia per month.
