“You write and get into the nerve of the crowd”: Alexander F. Sklyar celebrates 65 years

True Recognition

For the rise of his musical dream, Alexander Sklyar thanks the one whose portrait is on his T-shirt. Eduard Artemiev, the genius of Soviet and Russian music, almost half a century ago “tuned” the very young Sasha Sklyar to the right musical wave.

“I was inspired by and, in fact, is my godfather Eduard Artemiev. When we met him, I wanted to leave the institute and enter a music school. He dissuaded me from this”– recalls the rock musician, leader of the Va-Bank group Alexander F. Sklyar.

However, a diploma from the Faculty of International Economic Relations at MGIMO and five years of work in the Soviet consulate in North Korea only confirmed Sklyar’s understanding: his true recognition is not diplomatic, but the music scene. The route is winding, but truly its own.

“There are no recipes. You just write, write, and at some point you get into the nerve of the crowd”says the artist.

Brutal image

A shaved skull and an earring in his ear – both in the 1980s and in the 1990s, with the brutality of the image and the dashing lyrics, the leader of the Va-Bank group gravitated towards the underground, but at the same time he sang songs by Vladimir Vysotsky.

Sklyar, despite the foreign “F” in his stage name, was and remains a Russian rock musician. Sklyar’s concerts are still gathering full houses, and not only those who remember the dashing rock youth of Va-Bank are in the halls. There is also a new generation, Russian rap, it turns out, is a close relative of Russian rock.

“I call him “the last Gascon” behind his back, because Alexander Feliksovich, in addition to his songs, is always a completely unique charisma”– said rap artist Rich.
