Oscars 2023: ‘Everything, Everywhere, All At Once’ wins 7 Oscars in one night without too many surprises

ANGELS – “Everything, Everywhere, All at once” conquered everything, everywhere, at the same time.

Well, almost everything.

It was a favorite, and the prediction came true. He started the evening with 11 nominations and took home 7 gold statuettes, including major Oscars: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress. , Best Original Screenplay, and Best Editing.

“Ladies, don’t ever let them tell you your heyday is over,” said Michelle Yeoh, the first Asian woman to win an Academy Award for Best Actress, in her acceptance speech.

Jimmy Kimmel hosted the ceremony for the third time and drew laughter and applause from the first minute he showed up parachuting as if he had jumped out of a fighter jet flown by Tom Cruise like in Top Gun: Maverick. Inevitably, his opening monologue mentions the “safety” of the host, referring to the attack on Chris Rock last year at the hands of Will Smith.

The first prize was awarded to Guillermo del Toro for Pinocchio in the Best Animated Film category. But right after that, the figurines began to fall on the side of “Everything, Everywhere”.

Ke Hui Quan, Best Supporting Actor, said with tears in his eyes that his story was “the true American dream.” The 51-year-old actor appeared in films like Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom and The Goonies as a child, but then he practically disappeared and even considered leaving the theater, which he remembered tonight, before shouting: “Mom.” I just got an Oscar.”

Jamie Lee Curtis, winner of Best Supporting Actress for the same film, also remembered her parents, Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh, actors from Hollywood’s golden age who never won an Oscar even though they were nominated. Curtis, who has starred in “genre films” throughout his career – especially the horror genre – also dedicated his award to the hundreds of millions of viewers of his films: “We won an Oscar!”

The only acting award the All and Everywhere cast didn’t get was Best Actor, which went to an emotional Brendan Fraser for his role as a morbidly obese father trying to reunite with his daughter in The Whale. In her speech, Frazier thanked director Darren Aronofsky for giving her the opportunity to revive her career.

Historic night for Germany and India

The excellent production of All Quiet on the Western Front, a pacifist German film that puts us in the trenches of World War I, based on the novel of the same name by Erich Maria Remarque, won four awards in 1929: Best International Film. Film, Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, and Best Original Score.

For its part, the song Naatu Naatu from RRR gave Bollywood, India’s film industry, its first Oscar.

Another highlight of the evening was the performance of Daniel Roer, the director of Navalny, who received the award for best documentary. The film focuses on the figure of Alexei Navalny, the leader of the opposition in Russia, who is imprisoned in Moscow. His wife and daughter took the stage, and the first one dedicated an emotional message to her husband.

Public and Academy, two different worlds

As usual in recent years, the highest-grossing films don’t win at the Academy Awards.

Avatar: The Way of Water, the highest-grossing film of the past year, won only one award for best visual effects. Its director James Cameron, winner of three of the four highest-grossing films in history, didn’t even attend the gala.

And Top Gun: Maverick, another crowd-pleasing hit that was nominated for six awards, only won an Oscar for Best Sound. Its main character and one of its producers, Tom Cruise, was a great evening out.
