“Why exactly the third of September?” is an age-old question that worries many Russians. Mikhail Shufutinsky himself says that he never asked the creators of the composition about this.

“Igor Krutoy showed me the song, because at that time we were recording an album with him. I really liked it, and I decided to start trying to work on it. I never asked why”, – emphasized the performer.

According to Shufutinsky, the music and lyrics of the song are very capacious in meaning and each listener perceives them in his own way. And the birth of the “Third of September” chansonnier calls a coincidence.

The song “Third of September” became a meme in the early 2010s. Then, in one of the online communities, a picture of the American rapper Rick Ross appeared, which was accompanied by a quote from the chorus of Shufutinsky’s song. Some social media users noticed that in this picture, Ross resembles Shufutinsky. Subsequently, the picture began to actively spread on the Web, and the song gained such popularity that it did not have when it was released in the 90s.

In 2017, users launched a flash mob, posting new memes and hashtags dedicated to the song. By this time, many performers had already recorded cover versions of the hit. And the residents of St. Petersburg did want to make September 3rd a day off. “I think it would be fair to make September 3rd a day off.
