Viral infections in the nose can accelerate the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. This conclusion was reached by scientists from the University of Colorado (USA), they posted the results on the official website of the institution. In their study, they proposed to consider the effect of any biomarkers on neurodegeneration in the hippocampus.
The discovery was prompted by a post-mortem study of the brains of people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease. As indicated in the study, foci of inflammation and viral infections from the nose were found in all.
According to scientists, deposits of amoloids, protein-saccharide compounds that damage neurons, lead to the development of Alzheimer’s. Viruses lead to their appearance in the respiratory system. Following this logic, scientists come to the conclusion that it is not dementia that leads to a deterioration in the sense of smell, but vice versa.
Previously REN TV reported that neuroscientists had found a way to detect Alzheimer’s disease years before the first symptoms.
