Russians have a mutation that causes depression

Scientists at the Genotek Medical Genetic Center have identified a new genetic mutation in a number of Russians. She was told about “News”.

The study also involved specialists from the National Research University ITMO, the Bekhterev Medical Research Center for Psychiatry and Neurology, and the Almazov Medical Research Center.

In total, scientists analyzed the genomic data of more than 4.5 thousand Russians aged 18-65. It turned out that a new mutation occurs in 1 out of 10 inhabitants of the country.

Also, studies indicate that the mutation occurs in the MAGI2 gene, which is associated with maintaining intestinal homeostasis and is involved in the neural interconnection of the brain and intestines. Thus, it turned out that depression can develop, among other things, due to a violation of the brain-gut axis.

In conclusion, experts recalled that intestinal inflammation is not as common as diseases of other organs of the gastrointestinal tract. However, it is they who occupy the leading place in terms of the number of fatalities.
