Massive botulism infection after eating prepared food has spread beyond Moscow. In addition to the capital, outbreaks of infection have been recorded in the Moscow region, Kazan, and the Nizhny Novgorod region. The number of poisoned people has exceeded 100 and continues to grow.

Mass infection with botulism

In Russian regions, the number of poisonings from ready-to-eat food delivery is on the rise. The first cases of botulism in Moscow became known on June 15.

According to the source REN TV, the total number of people hospitalized with signs of botulism in Russia after food poisoning has reached 197 people. Cases were recorded in Moscow, the Moscow region, Tatarstan and the Nizhny Novgorod region. According to the source, 149 poisoned people were identified in Moscow, another 20 in the Moscow region.

In addition, 14 residents of the Nizhny Novgorod region and the same number in Kazan were hospitalized with signs of botulism.


“There are 14 patients hospitalized, eight of them are in intensive care, two are on a ventilator. Among the sick, all are adults, aged from 27 to 44 years,” – stated REN TV Chief freelance infectious disease specialist of the Ministry of Health of Tatarstan Khalit Khaertynov.

It is known that the victims ordered a salad with tuna, beans and apple from Gastroport and lobio from Local Kitchen (Kitchen in the area).

Who was detained in the poisoning case?

A criminal case has been opened into the mass poisoning of people. How reported official representative of the Russian Investigative Committee Svetlana Petrenko, three defendants have already been detained. Among them is the general director of “Kitchen on the District” Anton Lozin. The investigation decides on the choice of a preventive measure.

“Investigative actions are being carried out with those detained today by the general director of the company “LocalKitchen”, also known as “Kitchen on the District”, Anton Lozin, the head of the quality department of “LocalKitchen” Elena Mashkova and the de facto head of the bean manufacturing company “Savon-K” Vladimir Shin,” – noted Petrenko.


Activities of “Kitchen on the District” and the bean manufacturer “Savon-K” after mass poisonings suspended. Products seized in Moscow, Nizhny Novgorod region and Tatarstan were sent for examination. Investigators from the Investigative Committee are looking into what other regions could have received food hazardous to health.

During the investigation, the fact of illegal registration of several foreign citizens at their place of stay was also revealed. A criminal case has been opened regarding the organization of illegal migration. Botulism: symptoms and treatments

Botulism is a fairly common infectious disease that occurs annually in the regions of our country. It is associated with the entry into the body of a toxin that is produced in food products, she noted in an interview with REN TV Deputy Chief Physician for the Medical Unit of Infectious Clinical Hospital No. 2, Chief Freelance Specialist in Infectious Diseases of the Ministry of Health of the Nizhny Novgorod Region Elena Tikhomolova.

“Botulism is not a common infectious disease – it is not accompanied by fever or intoxication. It is not accompanied by intestinal manifestations: loose stools, vomiting. If this happens, it is short-lived. Neurological manifestations come to the fore. Our patients’ first complaints were of visual impairment, which typical for botulism. Impaired visual acuity, the appearance of fog in the eyes, double vision (…) Also (observed) the development of respiratory failure, swallowing problems appear, and respiratory arrest may occur.” – the doctor pointed out.

All patients with symptoms of botulism who applied to Nizhny Novgorod hospitals received timely therapy, she added. According to Tikhomolova, botulism is treated with a special serum – this is an antitoxin that is injected into the body to neutralize the toxin in the patient’s blood.

Odorless and tasteless toxin

According to the doctor, the products that caused mass poisoning could have been stored in violation of the temperature regime. Under such conditions, the toxin is produced more actively and there is more of it.

“The toxin loves the so-called anaerobic environment, so we are all accustomed to botulism – mushrooms, canned meat. But this is not necessary. (…) The toxin itself has neither smell nor taste. The presence of the toxin in the product is not accompanied by any visual changes. So, even an unaltered product may contain this toxin.” – Tikhomolova warned.
