The starting point for both SDGs and DE&I is “people.”Why Equity is Required in Society and Companies in the Future

The importance of D&I is also being recognized in Japan, and various attempts are beginning to spread, especially among major companies. However, there are many areas in which language alone takes on a life of its own, and many people consider diversity to be a gender-only issue. The world’s leading companiesD&I is the driving force behind team building that produces innovative ideasIt is becoming mainstream to make proactive and strategic efforts.

Session at “Better Workplace, Better Culture – SUMMIT #1 -Signs of future corporate culture-” held on May 19, 2022, “The world view that D&I aims for and information dissemination by companies The relationship between companies and “people”Emi Matsumoto, Social Impact Japan Lead, Dell Technologies Japan CDO Office, and Yuko Endo, Editor-in-Chief of MASHING UP, will be on stage.Dell Technologies, which continues to create innovation as a global company, faces D&I and continues to grow as an organization. I heard a tip for

The keyword that jumped out at the beginning of the session was “Equality and EquityThe concept of equity is essential for realizing the quality of an organization, but equity itself has not received much attention yet. Then, the Dell How does technology perceive this concept?

“As a group of multinational members, when we started promoting D&I, we firstIt is based on the premise that each person understands who they are, what their personality is, and what their goals are.. To unite people with different personalities, soil of acceptanceIs necessary. I am training for that. For example, during unconscious bias training, we also learn the concept of ‘equity’. Based on our philosophy,Aiming to realize D&I through culture and education.

We started training in Japan in 2018, and have continued training since 2020, when Dell and EMC Japan merged to form Dell Technologies. Understanding unconscious bias was important for people from different cultures to interact.Recognizing differences and then finding commonalities. Then discuss how to move forward. By having a place for dialogue like this, we can see the way forward.” (Mr. Matsumoto)

Furthermore, it is the existence of the on-site manager that becomes important.

“In promoting D&I within an organization,There are many situations where individual support is required on site.. This is because each member has a variety of circumstances, such as some members working while raising children or nursing care, and others suffering from loneliness.

While following up on the system side, the support of the site manager is indispensable for such individual irregularities. At our company, through one-on-one meetings with management, we check whether team members are well engaged in their work. In addition, people in higher positions are also working to understand and support each environment of the organization. We believe that the inclusion of the entire organization, not just the workplace, can be achieved only when equity is understood.(Mr. Matsumoto)

In addition, Dell Technologies has a culture of admiration from the desire to create an environment where diverse people can contribute to the realization of the vision and mission.

“We tend to give priority to things like ‘profitable or not profitable’.The SDGs have permeated, and many companies are linking ESG perspectives to their management.

From this background, at our company, when awarding awards, it is not always about results.whether it has had a social impact“whether you have created a cultureAlso, there are many cases where not only superiors and subordinates praise each other, but also employees praise each other.” (Mr. Matsumoto)

D&I and the SDGs are deeply intertwined

Mr. Matsumoto talking

“One way of having equity is to overcome individual circumstances and think about how that person can do their job well. By increasing that, we aim to improve the performance of the team as a whole. I would like to increase the number of people who are aware of unconscious bias and ideas such as equity, and take action,” says Mr. Matsumoto.

The next topic is “D&I and SDGs”In general, the two are often thought of separately. When we talk about SDGs, we tend to focus on environmental issues such as reducing plastics and CO2 emissions, but the United Nations is working to mainstream human rights in the first place.. Just as the SDGs agenda begins with the phrase “no one is left behind,” the goals of the SDGs are like a continuohuman rightsThere is the existence of ”, Endo outlines.Respect for “people” is a prerequisite for achieving the SDGsemphasized.

Mr. Matsumoto said, “At Dell Technologies, in 2019, in order to achieve 17 mutually correlated SDGs goals, we will revamp our past 10-year plan up to 2020, and set ESG goals up to 2030 as “Sustainability – promoting sustainability, fostering a culture of inclusion, contributing to lifestyle change, respecting ethics and privacy” was set.

Up to now, based on these four ESG goals,We have been working in a wide range of fields, such as reducing marine litter and carbon dioxide, solving poverty problems, promoting health through IT, and contributing to medical care. The company. Mr. Matsumoto says, “We also set detailed goals for ESG targets. It’s a huge challenge, but that’s why we take it positively and set big goals.. From there, it’s like, ‘So how can we achieve this? “WhenReverse the processI do,” he says.

“We have set four ESG goals as“moon shot goalAs the name suggests, it is a difficult goal, butAll four items lead to the achievement of the SDGs. Regarding inclusions,In terms of recruitment and promotion, we have set goals from the viewpoint of gender and race.Inclusion and the SDGs are not separate(Mr. Matsumoto)

Endo also said, “Social issues are all interrelated. In order for the company itself to be sustainable, it is necessary to have DE&I goals and initiatives,” he nodded.

Focusing on the unconscious bias behind the flames

MASHING UP Chief Editor Yuko Endo

“Better Workplace, Better Culture – SUMMIT #1 – Signs of future corporate culture -” was held online for two days. A heated discussion unfolded about the newly born “Relations” of companies and stakeholders, and the signs of corporate culture that will be born in response. This session was held on May 19, Day 2.

The third theme is “Communication without flames and communication in the futureIn recent years, companies have paid more attention to this aspect, but what does Dell Technologies pay attention to in its communication?

“Of course, I always ask the public relations team to check whether there are any problems with my remarks. It is important to double-check from various perspectives.Social values change year by year, so I am careful to update each time.(Mr. Matsumoto)

Endo said, “Unconscious bias is often behind blazesCommenting from the media’s point of view, he cited the controversial example of a manga advertisement depicting a busty high school girl published in the Nikkei Shimbun in April 2022.

“This is probably due to the bias that ‘men read economic newspapers. Men will sympathize with such images.’ It is the same as making commercials with the assumption that women are the ones raising children. There are people who see a different side from the side that is seen.It is important to have the opposite point of view, such that what is normal for you is not normal for someone in a different environment.Understanding diversity requires imagination”(Endo)

Finally, looking back on the session, he said, “There are many things that one company and one person cannot do to achieve diversity. That is why we have Goal 17 of the SDGs, ‘Let’s achieve our goals through partnerships.’ I would like to build more and more partnerships.” Mr. Matsumoto said.

“People” are the foundation of the achievement of the SDGs goals and the process. The session served as a reminder that the sustainability of society and companies can develop only when people are valued.
