Produced 30,000 kiloliters of domestic SAF

JGC, Cosmo Oil, and Revo International have established a new company.

In the global trend toward decarbonization, the aviation industry considers the use of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to be the number one priority. In the world, Finnish company Neste is recognized as the world’s largest SAF manufacturer, and in Japan, it has signed an exclusive sales contract with Itochu Corporation to accelerate domestic supply.

However, considering the future demand, the current situation is that the supply of SAF is overwhelmingly short.

Amid the ongoing competition for SAF, in order to ensure stable operations in the aviation industry, Japan faced the challenge of building a supply chain that could stably cover everything from securing raw materials to manufacturing SAF domestically. .

In March 2022, several companies, including airline operators such as ANA and JAL, as well as JGC, Cosmo Oil, and Revo International, which have established new companies this time, will volunteer to work on the spread and expansion of SAF across the industry. Established the group “ACT FOR SKY”.

From the summer of 2020, JGC, Cosmo Oil, and Revo International will also jointly consider commercialization for building a supply chain from collecting waste cooking oil in Japan to manufacturing, transporting and supplying SAF. was In 2021, it will also be adopted as a subsidized project by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO). The initiative by the new company is said to be part of NEDO’s subsidy project.

To supply domestically produced SAF, Revo International and JGC HD will be in charge of raw material procurement, and the Cosmo Energy Group (Cosmo Oil, Cosmo Oil Marketing) will be in charge of manufacturing and selling SAF to consumers. In addition, JGC will cover the design, procurement and construction services related to the SAF manufacturing equipment.

The SAF manufacturing facility of the new company willConstruction is planned to start in the summer of 2023 at Cosmo Oil’s Sakai Refinery in Sakai City, Osaka Prefecture.Construction is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2024, and operations are scheduled to begin in the second half of fiscal 2024 to the beginning of fiscal 2025. In addition to SAF, the facility will also produce bio-naphtha, which is a raw material for bio-plastics, and bio-diesel.

In Japan, Euglena, a bio-venture company, is proceeding with a preliminary basic design of a commercial plant to manufacture SAF using waste cooking oil and microalga euglena as raw materials. Euglena plans to complete the plant in 2025, start operation in 2026, and manufacture more than 250,000 kiloliters of SAF per year.
