unworthy vacation

Adhering to the logic of the distribution of rights between workers and the vulnerable population, some senators, such as Ricardo Velazquez, Napoleon Gomez Urrutia and Patricia MercadoFrom September 1, amendments will be made to the Federal Labor Law, providing for an increase in the minimum period of paid leave for employees from six to 12 or 15 days. There was already an open parliament on this issue.

The topic is marked with the motto “Worthy rest”. The argument in favor of extending the leave is based on the fact that the current law guarantees at least six days off after one year of work, and this period is gradually increasing.

While it sounds very “fair” for the Senate to guarantee longer vacations and holidays, it would be necessary that when talking about more paid holidays, lawmakers also talk about productivity, because Mexico is a country where workers work more hours, but there where they are less productive.

Consulting firm Expert Market analyzed data from the OECD and the World Bank and reports that Mexico has 2,124 hours of work per year but only comes up with a GDP per capita of $20,447. In other words: in this country the worker wastes a lot of time.

It’s not hard to see how unproductive the average Mexican worker is, despite the many accolades he receives from politicians who want to win their votes. In that sense, businessmen and legislators would do well to push for legal reforms that also boost productivity, not just rest periods.

If holidays are to be transformed to be “worthy” it is because they are currently the opposite, according to senatorial logic: workers today enjoy unworthy holidays because the unworthy ones are the result of what they produce according to international comparisons.

Unfortunately, since the 4T is not about effort or merit, we will end up with more employed workers, yes, but producing exactly the same (or less, because they will work fewer days). Mexico, a country to enjoy.

STOCKHOLM: WATER WEEK

World Water Week is held in Stockholm, Sweden, with Mexico participating. On Thursday there will be two very topical panels. One of them called regenerative agriculture to value water and soil. In this regard, it is worth recalling the UNAM report “Views of water in Mexico: proposals for ensuring water security” by the researcher. Fernando J. Gonzalez, where it is found that Mexico needs $80 billion for water security; and that 76 percent of the water is consumed by the agricultural sector, while the industrial sector consumes only 4 percent. The Femsa Foundation will participate in another panel on innovation.
