No on offer 27

Among the November 8 ballots, there are two related to the spread of legal gambling in California.

One of them, Proposition 27, is dangerous and harmful. Their argumentation is unconvincing and, on the contrary, they try to soften the true nature of the electoral measure. State voters would have done the right thing if they had rejected it on November 8th.

It’s a constitutional amendment that could kick-start the biggest sports betting expansion in state history, with every mobile phone becoming a home casino without having to travel long distances.

As history shows, the simplification of gambling has consistently increased gambling addiction, especially among minors. Because that’s exactly what it’s all about.

As you know, people with lower incomes and a lower level of education are the easiest victims of gambling.

The cynicism of the authors of the measure is visible right in the title: “Legalization of sports betting and proceeds from the homeless prevention fund initiativeas if both were connected, showing that this is an attempt to pretend that the law is meant to help homelesswhen, if it were approved and launched from January next year, it would be the other way around. This can increase the number of underdogs among those who lose everything by gambling.

And even if Proposition 27 is accepted and he commits himself homeless a few tens of millions of dollars will not affect their situation, since this year the Legislature has allocated more than 13 billion dollars to solve the problem of the homeless.

Behind Proposition 27 are big game companies FanDuel and DraftKings, which together control 90 percent of the daily fantasy sports market.

Contrary to claims, the fact that sports betting is addictive is not new. Especially when combined with gambling.

In 2021, Michigan’s first year of legalizing sports betting and online gambling, over 4,400 calls were made to the gambling hotline, four times the number of the previous year.

We are particularly concerned about the danger of addiction among young people. Although gambling is considered to be reserved for people over 21, in the more than 30 states that have legalized sports betting since the Supreme Court allowed it to do so, the rate of gambling problems among high school students is twice that of adults. Those who start gambling at the age of 12 are more likely to develop this addiction.

In addition, the text of the proposal states that those who want to participate in the gold that will come if approved must make a deposit of $100 million, and it is about convincing us that this is a disinterested help from the casino. . companies. It deserves our support for their alleged generosity. But it is not.

First, because it is compensated by money that should help the homeless. This is not a gift. And secondly, because this large amount of money will leave small companies out of competition, which, unlike the two that promote and finance Proposition 27, cannot pay this 100 million.

At the same time, the legalization of this type of gambling in California will undermine the revenue base of Indian casinos, where gambling is limited and takes place in the same premises and which financially helps the state’s underprivileged people. And even if Proposition 26 is passed, allowing sports betting in these casinos, Proposition 27 will be just as devastating for the tribes.

All in all, Proposition 27 is a bad idea.

So, on November 8, vote NO on Proposition 27!
