Incumbent President Wendy Carrillo and activist Mia Livas Porter will face off in the elections for the 51st constituency. They are both Democrats.

District 51 includes all of East Los Angeles, including Boyle Heights, where Carrillo is from, and part of the city of Los Angeles, but as a result of the redistribution, its geographic boundaries have shifted north and its number, 52, now includes parts of Glendale. Pasadena and Alhambra.

In the primary elections on June 7, Carrillo received 49% of the vote against 38% for Livas Porter.

68% of its residents are Hispanic, and 62% of voters voted for the Democratic Party.

Carrillo is a native of El Salvador whose family moved to Los Angeles to escape violence and grew up in Boyle Heights and City Terrace. She understands the immigrant narrative and has been a constant and tireless advocate for the welfare of society both during her parliamentary journey and before running for office.
