“Fraud”: Russian Federation “offended” by Denmark not allowing them to research Nord Stream

They said they would conduct a comprehensive investigation in Copenhagen without the participation of Russia and the results would be made known to the world public. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation called such a decision “fraud”.

Denmark will not allow Russia to participate in the investigation of explosions at the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines. This was announced by Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lekke Rasmussen on Thursday, March 16, writes The Local.

“Denmark, Sweden and Germany have the rule of law and you can count on our investigations,” Rasmussen said.

According to the head of the Danish diplomatic office, each of the three countries launched an investigation into the explosions at the Nord Stream pipelines on September 26 last year.

Russian President Vladimir Putin reportedly said earlier this week that he wanted Denmark to allow Russia to participate in the investigation.

It was noted that Denmark has the right to control who participates in the investigation into the explosion in the Danish economic zone. Two of the four spills occurred in the Danish region and two in the Swedish region.

On Tuesday, Danish authorities received a notification from the Russian company Gazprom that an object was discovered near the site of the explosions in the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline.

“North Stream pipeline owners have the opportunity to examine the pipelines. The object was seen in this context. We told the Russians that we would conduct a comprehensive investigation. We will announce the results when we do.” This is the investigation,” Rasmussen said.

Kremlin’s reaction to Denmark’s rejection

On March 16, the official representative of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Maria Zakharova, said that the exclusion of the Russian Federation from investigating the explosions in Nord Stream was a “fraud” and a “true hoax”.

“They said that they are the state of law, that is, the investigation they will make is correct from the beginning, and according to the result of this investigation, they can say something to someone. Either this is a fraud, this is definitely something like a real deception “, – Russian agency “TASS” quotes Zakharova’s words.

Explosions in Nord Stream gas pipelines

Recall four leaks at the end of September last year at two Nord Stream pipelines in the Baltic Sea off the Danish island of Bornholm, seismic institutes reported that they recorded two underwater explosions before the leaks appeared. While the spills occurred in international waters, two of them took place in the Danish exclusive economic zone and two in Sweden.

On September 28, the British Ministry of Defense suggested that Russia could blow up Nord Stream using an underwater drone. According to the British military, the most likely scenario was the secret delivery of an autonomous underwater drone with a payload to separate sections of gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea. The diver may have been launched from a small boat, such as a fishing boat, then explosives could have been thrown near the pipes.
