“I’m sick of war”: Czech President predicts waning support for Ukraine

Petr Pavel believes that due to the elections in the United States in 2024 and the decline of European support, Ukraine will probably no longer be able to conduct complex operations. That’s why 2023 is a key year.

Ukraine must reckon with the decline in Western support in the future, because war fatigue will pay the price. Such a statement was made today, March 22, by the President of the Czech Republic, Petr Pavel, in an interview with the Süddeutsche Zeitung.

“We have to take into account the war fatigue and what that means for support from Western countries. It will diminish over time,” Pavel said.

He also believes that the US presidential election in 2024 will affect the situation with help. They are expected to focus on domestic politics. Therefore, according to him, in 2024 Ukraine will probably no longer be able to launch any large and complex operations, it is worth counting on 2023.

“If the US support decreases, the support from some European countries will also decrease. Ukraine should take this into account. This year is decisive for the development of the war,” Pavel said.

According to him, Western states now provide Ukraine with the necessary weapons so that it can take the best starting position for any negotiations with the Russian Federation.

On March 19, Petr Pavel announced that the Armed Forces of Ukraine will attempt to launch a large-scale offensive this year. If unsuccessful, it will be extremely difficult to get funding from allies for new attacks.

Recall that on March 17, the NYT wrote that the Armed Forces of Ukraine may organize a counterattack due to the lack of ammunition. According to journalists, Ukrainian troops are spending a large amount of shells in Bakhmut, and in conditions of famine a new offensive will be required.

On March 16, the media reported that the United States accelerated the shipment of military equipment to Ukraine in anticipation of a counterattack by Ukrainian troops. According to Pentagon expectations, it will begin in May.
