Who prevented Finland from joining NATO?

Hungary and Turkey opposed the entry of Finland and Sweden into NATO, while the other members of the alliance approved the entry. On March 23, the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey approved a draft law approving Finland’s application to join NATO. This means that there will be no obstacles.

On January 25, Hungary made it clear that the ratification of Finland and Sweden’s accession to NATO could be delayed. A group of Hungarian deputies demanded additional negotiations with candidate countries.

In February, Finland began building a fence on the border of the Russian Federation to protect itself. In the next few years, the Finns plan to build a 200-kilometer barrier. Its purpose is to prevent unwanted border crossings.

On May 18, 2022, in the midst of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Sweden and Finland formally applied to join NATO. Swedish Ambassador to the Alliance Axel Wernhoff and his Finnish colleague Klaus Korhonen handed over the application letters previously signed by the foreign ministers. The transfer of the application took place at the headquarters of the military bloc in Brussels.
