Austrian lawmakers protest during Zelensky’s speech (photo, video)

Before leaving the hall, FPÖ members hung banners with the words “Place for Peace” and “Place for Neutrality” in front of them. Activists, who considered it a shame to invite the President of Ukraine to the meeting, gathered under the parliament building.

Today, on March 30, the speech of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky in the Austrian Parliament was broadcast on video. The FPÖ faction protested by leaving the building during the leader’s speech. Colleagues condemned the deputies. This is known from the material Vienna.AT.

The President spoke in the plenary hall of the Austrian National Council. His speech was published on the Internet. The Ukrainian leader thanked the Austrians for helping his country.

“When we return with a request for support, we ask you to protect life,” Zelensky said.

The President also invited Austrian deputies to Ukraine to see for themselves.

One of the groups protested against the speech of the Ukrainian leader. At the beginning of their speeches, FPÖ deputies took out banners that read “Place for Peace” and “Place for Neutrality”, which they placed on the tables in front of them. Then they left the room.

The FPÖ party used the time to answer the Austrian Foreign Minister’s critical questions. A debate began about the country’s neutrality, but deputies of other groups condemned the protest of their colleagues.

Reaction from lawmakers and society to FPÖ protest

Austrian journalists reported that about a hundred activists came to the rally near the parliament. Someone named Stefan Krizmanych described Zelensky’s invitation to speak as “shameful”. He told reporters that the Ukrainian President openly cooperated with ultranationalists, dismantled the opposition and tolerated “black lists”.

But colleagues of the lawmakers did not support the protest. Representatives of various parties criticized the action, calling it embarrassing, and the FPÖ’s recommendations were pro-Russian.

“It’s embarrassing that they’re behaving like that. It’s really embarrassing,” said ÖVP spokesman Reinhold Lopatka.

He criticized his colleagues for speaking out against Zelensky. According to him, Ukraine “wisely and resolutely” resisted the aggressor, for which it deserves respect. He also stressed that Ukrainians are now defending the free Western social system.

“If anyone in the House of Representatives betrays neutrality, it’s the FPÖ,” said Green Party spokesperson Eva Ernst-Diedzic. said.

According to him, the war in Ukraine is endangering stability around the world. He also thanked the association for its solidarity and the way Ukrainian refugees are accepted.

“If you only submit 30 pro-Russian proposals a year, it is neither a sign of peace nor a sign of neutrality,” said SPÖ deputy leader Jörg Leichtfried.

NEOS head Beata Meinl-Reisinger said she was embarrassed that lawmakers could not tell the difference between a victim and a perpetrator.

Recall, the Russian Ambassador to Budapest, Yevgeny Stanislavov, said that Hungary was included in the list of “non-enemy countries”. But according to him, the Russians are ready for constructive cooperation with the Hungarians.

Also on March 30, Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba commented on the aggressor country’s presidency in the UN Security Council since April 1. To him, it seems like a cruel joke.
