As early as summer: Latvia restarts conscription in its Armed Forces

Service for first hires starts on July 1st. By this time, the Armed Forces plans to recruit 500 soldiers aged between 18 and 27.

Latvia, which abolished conscription in 2006, resumed conscription. According to the press service of the Seimas, Parliament approved the relevant law in its third reading.

The draft will be subject to men aged 18 to 27 years. The service for them will begin on July 1, 2023.

There are several types of services provided.

He will be able to work for 11 months in the active units of the National Armed Forces or in some of the National Guards, and for five years in the entire National Guard.

In addition, as of January 1, 2024, he will be able to serve by reading the Reserve Officer program for university and college students.

While the national defense organizations are making calls for military service, it is planned to register voluntary soldiers as a priority. In case of less than 500 people, losses will be taken as usual.

The law also stipulates that those who do not attend the controls determined at the place and time specified in the agenda of the Ministry of National Defense without a valid reason will be given a warning or a fine of up to 350 Euros.

Recall, on March 9, it was learned that deserters convicted in Ukraine will be drafted into the army. According to Mark Andrusyak, head of the main personnel department of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, evading the army is not a serious crime, therefore, it does not interfere with the mobilization.

We also reported that Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree on conscription in the spring. The presidential decree states that from April 1 to July 15, 147,000 people are planned to be drafted into the military.
