The head of the Kryvyi Rih Defense Council, Oleksandr Vilkul, said he regretted advocating a separate status for the Russian language and a block-free Ukraine before the full-scale Russian invasion. He talked about this in an interview with Ukrayinska Pravda, published on Thursday, April 13.
“I sincerely believed that it was possible. So the model of Finland, Switzerland, Austria. And by the way, most of the country at certain times believed in it. I always understood that Russia is a very dangerous neighbor. Because the essence of Russia is an empire, and the empire is always expanding “It lives through assimilation and expansion. I thought the best balance for Ukraine was incompatibility. They were wrong.”
The head of the Kryvyi Rih Defense Council believes that the position of citizens before the war no longer matters, since in the conditions of Russian aggression the only way for Ukraine is to join the NATO bloc.
“Russia attacked Ukraine, so the only possibility for us in the future is to enter a collective security system, so that our children and grandchildren do not fight. This is NATO. Or better, the division of Russia into 5-6 smaller parts. states and less aggressive states “I admit that I was wrong. The neutral status was ineffective, it’s definitely my fault.”
The official also noted that after the war, Ukraine will have a window of opportunity for up to two years, during which the authorities and people of the country should make every effort to join the European Union.
“I believe that Ukraine actually has a chance to join the EU. The challenges are to do all this very quickly. So Ukraine will really have two years. In two years, we have to enter the EU, we have to do it. Vilkul, Volodymyr Zelensky’s in the international arena I can say that he has done great work, and if the whole country does its “homework” – I think it will be successful to “push” the country into European society,” he said.
Also, according to the official, the concept of “good Russians” justifies Russia’s crimes in Ukraine.
“Not everyone is bad, there are good Russians out there” – I believe this is a justifying technology. Good Russians brought to power and supported Putin? This won’t happen. I think there are no such people,” Vilkul added.
Recall that on March 26, Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic announced the creation of a special bloc under the leadership of the USA, which should also include Ukraine. According to him, in the near future, decisions will be taken regarding the urgent accession of Ukraine to the EU.
Earlier on 24 March, it was reported that the EU is assessing Ukraine’s progress in implementing anti-corruption recommendations. The monitoring body found that despite the war, the state fulfilled 15 out of 31 points.
