Indonesia proposes to hold a referendum in Ukraine’s “disputed” territory: Foreign Ministry responds

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine said that there was no “dispute” over the territories – they were occupied by Russia, and this was recorded in UN documents.

Indonesian Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto presented his plan for the peaceful resolution of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine at the Shangri-La Dialogue Security Forum in Singapore. On Saturday, June 3, he reported to Reuters.

Subianto’s proposed plan includes several measures at once. First, it was proposed to introduce an immediate ceasefire. According to Subianto, this is necessary to ensure security and stop violence, thus paving the way for a peaceful solution.

One of the most important aspects of the plan is the creation of a demilitarized zone that will be under the control of peacekeepers. The parties to the conflict should retreat to a distance of 15 kilometers from the line of contact.

In addition, the plan envisages holding new referendums in “disputed areas” under the auspices of the UN. However, it has not yet been specified which regions are considered “controversial”.

The reaction of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine

Ukrainian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Oleg Nikolenko emphasized that these regions are not only “controversial”, they are actually occupied by Russia.

“There is no disputed territory between Ukraine and the Russian Federation where a referendum can be held. Russia carried out an act of aggression, occupying Crimea and parts of Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporozhye and Kherson regions. This fact is recorded in UN official documents.” said Nikolenko.

The Foreign Ministry spokesman also noted that Ukraine appreciated Indonesia’s interest in restoring peace, but reminded of the existence of a “peace formula” proposed by President Volodymyr Zelensky. This formula aims at restoring the full sovereignty of Ukraine in the occupied territories and ensuring sustainable peace.

Recall, on May 23, it was reported that the leaders of six African states wanted to start peace talks between Ukraine and the Russian Federation, but at the same time they may not have a condition for the withdrawal of the invaders from the territory of Ukraine. .

Earlier, on May 9, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said that at the moment he is not ready to negotiate as both sides are confident of victory. According to him, there is still more time for peace initiatives and it is not known when they will start.
