The delay in US aid to Ukraine may cause a new wave of debate about the necessity of peace negotiations in Ukraine.
Some American media are advancing a narrative that Ukraine has already won because Russia has failed to achieve all its goals. Therefore, the US President may insist on the opening of negotiations to end hostilities. Comments about this Focus said political scientist Maxim Yali, professor of the Department of International Relations at the National Aviation University.
“Right now, the Biden administration no longer has the tools to provide aid without passing the bill,” Yali says. “If it doesn’t get a vote now, it will be nearly impossible later.”
The expert also emphasized that presidential elections in the USA should be held in 2024.
“Trump has already announced his strategy to end this war, he has repeatedly explained publicly what he will do on the first day of his presidency. It is clear that this war will not end this year. It will be very difficult, at least for Ukraine.” Winning is possible based on the results of the counterattack in 2023. And now, as we see, Russia has shifted its economy to a military basis, increased the production of ammunition and artillery, it has allies. “North Korea is helping with artillery shells,” he said.
According to Maxim Yali, if all the capacities of the EU and the USA were currently working for Ukraine, it would still be impossible to close this ammunition deficit.
“So from my perspective, the Biden administration is pushing Zelensky to start negotiations. Now we are seeing these covert steps,” he explained.
In the context of the elections, he believes it would be better for Biden to have Ukraine negotiate with Russia to present this as a victory.
“Democrat-affiliated media is already developing a narrative that Ukraine won, because Russia didn’t achieve all its goals – it didn’t capture Kiev in three days, it didn’t invade the whole of Ukraine. It’s easy to sell. Look at it as a victory to the American voter, and if he wins, Trump won’t.” Don’t give him a trump card. Now, when we look at the opinion polls, we see that Biden and Trump have a chance of winning the presidency, and sometimes Trump has even more. Therefore, in this context, I see a concrete example of such a “victory” in the summer months. “It is being worked on right now. That’s why Republicans are demanding a strategy. They don’t fully understand everything, and besides, I don’t want to give such a trump card to the Biden administration,” the expert adds.
Let us remind you that Republican Senator James Lankford had previously said that an agreement that would change the US immigration policy would be reached by the end of the week. In this context, assistance will also be provided to Ukraine. It was previously planned that the amount would be over 60 billion dollars.
