Before joining NATO: Ukraine and the UK signed a security agreement (video)

Ukraine and the UK signed a security agreement that will remain in force until Ukraine joins NATO. The President of Ukraine and the Prime Minister of Great Britain signed this bilateral agreement as a result of negotiations held at the Mariinsky Palace in Kiev on Friday, January 12. This was reported by “European Truth”.

Officially called the “Security Cooperation Agreement between Ukraine and the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland”, the document was the first of a series of security agreements implemented under previously reached agreements signed between Ukraine and members during the Vilnius NATO summit. The “Group of Seven” and other states that are parties to these agreements.

What does the agreement provide?

President Vladimir Zelensky noted that Britain’s security obligations will remain in force until Ukraine joins NATO.

The agreement assumes:

  • Guaranteed annual financial assistance of 2.5 billion pounds ($3 billion);
  • Expanding cooperation in the fields of intelligence and cybersecurity.

“If such an agreement had been reached in 1991, there would have been no war,” Zelensky said.

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak emphasized that this was the first security commitment signed by Ukraine. He also reminded that Great Britain was the first country to supply Ukraine with lethal weapons, tanks, long-range missiles and other military equipment.

Leaders also announced that they had defined the validity period of the agreement as ten years, with the possibility of extending it. However, if Ukraine joins NATO before this period expires, its security obligations will automatically fall under NATO’s jurisdiction.

Under the agreement, the UK will share intelligence with Ukraine, assist with cyber security, military training and strengthen defense industry cooperation.
