“The weapons were wasted and did nothing”: Germany calls for cut in aid to Ukraine

Saxony Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer says Germany has reached the limit of its ability to support Ukraine. He also advocates talks with Russia.

Saxony Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer has called for a reduction in aid to Ukraine, saying it makes no sense. According to him, the Ukrainian war will end not on the battlefield, but at the negotiating table. Zeit writes about this.

“We can no longer give Ukraine funds for weapons, so that these weapons are spent and do nothing. Everything must be proportionate. Yes, but we understand that we have reached our limits,” the politician said.

He added that he was against arms supplies from the very beginning of the all-out war in Ukraine and was a supporter of diplomatic initiatives.

Last year, Saxony’s prime minister had raised the issue of a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine if Ukraine temporarily gave up its territory, sparking outrage in Ukraine. Kretschmer pointed to budget increases in recent years.

Let us recall that on August 9 it became known that Ukrainian authorities asked Washington to allow the use of ATACMS missiles to destroy the airspace used by Russia in response to the occupation of the Kursk region.
