According to the German Chancellor, Berlin continues to support Kiev so that it has the opportunity to preserve its sovereignty and territorial integrity, but the role of diplomacy cannot be left aside.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz believes that all possibilities should be explored to start a peace process in Ukraine. He said this during an official visit to Kazakhstan, according to Reuters.
Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev called on a German politician to abandon the idea that Russia could be defeated militarily on the battlefield and therefore China’s peace plan should be supported. The German Chancellor rejected the suggestion.
Astana remains a close ally of Moscow, although it does not support either side in the war between Ukraine and Russia. Kazakhstan calls for peace by any means necessary, but does not support the occupation of Ukrainian territory.
“It is a fact that Russia cannot be defeated militarily. Further escalation of the war will lead to irreparable consequences for all of humanity and, first of all, for the countries involved in the Russia-Ukraine conflict,” Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said.
Olaf Scholz immediately stated that he did not agree with such conclusions. Berlin supports Kiev because Moscow illegally occupied Kiev territory and this assistance will continue so that Ukraine has the opportunity to defend itself and thus preserve its integrity and sovereignty.
The German Chancellor also believes that a diplomatic end to the war is necessary and that the second peace summit, which will take place before the end of the year and in which Russia could also participate, could play an effective role in this.
“At the same time, it is clear to us that we must continue to explore opportunities for peaceful development, and in my opinion, this will not work in a way where Russia encourages everything, encourages war, continues. Attacking Ukraine with great aggression. And this is something that should never be ignored in everything we discuss. It is Russia that not only starts the war, but also continues it, and at any moment it can contribute to its end by stopping the aggression,” Olaf Scholz concluded.
Let’s recall, on September 9, it was reported that Olaf Scholz proposed to invite the Russian Federation to the second peace summit. Journalists revealed that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had a secret meeting with German Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz. The German politician said that he was trying to end large-scale hostilities as quickly as possible.
It later became clear that the Bundestag did not share the optimism for a peaceful resolution of the war. According to the German government’s press spokesman Steffen Hebestreit, there was little reason to rejoice despite statements by Chancellor Olaf Scholz that negotiations should begin between Moscow and Kiev.
