The world of sports and the American public at large mourn this Friday the death of Corey Phelan, a promising 20-year-old baseball player. Young man was diagnosed with lymphoma last April and after receiving appropriate treatment and experiencing little improvement in the following months, the team he played for finally confirmed that this week the pitcher lost the battle with the disease.
Phelan joined the Philadelphia Phillies two years ago., a club playing in the lower divisions of the National Baseball League. A month after his illness became known, the athlete momentarily returned to the bench to cheer on his teammates in one of the remaining matches at the end of the season. “It was great, I can’t put into words how great it was to be back”explained in front of the microphones that they wanted to know how they felt about their brief return to the stadiums.
The Phillies and MLB, the regular competition organization, released two statements to publicly mourn the death of Corey Phelanas well as paying tribute to a “very special person”, according to the club’s youth academy director Preston Mattingly, who described the late New York-born player as a sociable, smiling and enthusiastic young man.
“Corey was and always will be a special person. His smile lit up any room and everyone who interacted with him enjoyed meeting him. His memory will live on forever, especially in the Phyllis family.”, declared.
