The new Formula E season will bring several new features to the debut. Chief among these is, of course, the emergence of new and more efficient Gen3 single-seat vehicles. For these electric vehicles ABB built new charging stations which will be used starting from the first E-Prix of the new season. As a reminder, from the 9th season of Formula E, ABB will take on a new role as the official supplier of charging stations.
How do they work these new Gen3 Formula E car charging stations? The company announces the development of a compact product that allows new single-seat cars to be charged before a race and between sessions. When designing, ABB paid great attention to strength and ergonomics to facilitate transportation and installation in all parts of the world where the championship will take place.
In terms of technical specifications, ABB says that each individual station can supply one maximum power 160 kW and maybe Charge two 80KW vehicles at the same time. Thus, it will no longer be necessary to have one station for every single car.
The new station also has a user-friendly interface that allows you to monitor the status of replenishment of a single car in real time. It uses CCS2 connectors and measures 1300mm high (1520mm including screen) x 1150mm wide x 850mm deep. The weight of each individual station is 450 kg. Frank MulonCEO of ABB E-mobility, said:
We are excited to bring our innovative charging solutions to the world’s largest electric vehicle arena, while maintaining our commitment to using Formula E as a testing ground for new, more sustainable technologies. Gen3 Car Charging will provide us with valuable charging information in a highly competitive environment. The experience and knowledge gained will be used to continuously improve ABB charging stations for customers and users.
Jamie ReiglCEO of Formula E, added:
Technological progress and sustainable innovation are the cornerstones of the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship. Our partnership with ABB is based on a shared commitment to the development of electromobility and we are pleased that ABB will provide advanced charging systems for our third generation racing teams. ABB’s mobile charging stations are the industry standard and will be a key infrastructure for hosting the championship. We look forward to demonstrating ABB charging stations during the championship and demonstrating that high performance and sustainability can coexist without compromise.
