Pope Francis prays for Pele’s health, Brazilian politician says

Pope Francis said at a meeting with the governor of the Brazilian state of São Paulo, Rodrigo Garcia, that he was praying for the health of former football player Edson Arantes do Nascimento “Pele”, hospitalized since last week, whose condition is causing worldwide concern.

“The football-obsessed Pope told us that he was praying for the health of our football king, Pele.Garcia said in a message he posted on his social media. after a private audience he had that Wednesday with the Pope in the Vatican.

The 82-year-old three-time world champion has been hospitalized at the Albert Einstein Hospital in Sao Paulo since November 29, where, according to the latest medical bulletin, he continues to recover satisfactorily from a lung infection.

Considered by many to be the best football player of all time, he regularly goes to the same hospital for chemotherapy sessions, where he is being treated for colon cancer, diagnosed last year.

According to his doctors, Pelé was hospitalized to evaluate changes in chemotherapy treatment, and a few days later it was reported that he also suffered from a respiratory infection.

The infection arose after the former football player contracted the coronavirus about three weeks ago, according to his relatives.

His daughters also denied press reports that Pele was no longer responding to the chemotherapy treatments he was undergoing, so his doctors decided to suspend him and offer him palliative care.

The ex-footballer’s health has also deteriorated in recent years due to other causes, such as spinal, hip and knee problems, which reduced his mobility and forced him to undergo surgery, in addition to suffering a kidney crisis.
