After the failure of Gerardo “Tata” Martino at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar with the Mexican team El Tri, he is looking for a new strategist to start the process of preparing for the 2026 World Cup. Miguel “Piojo” Herrera seems strong for a second cycle at the helm of the national team, and in his latest statements, he has claimed to be the best fit for the position.
Speaking to TUDN, the former Tigres UANL Liga MX coach stated that his good performance during his 2013-2015 El Tri tenure opens the door for him to return.
“I am very happy with what I did, for the fact that I worked to be in the next process, today they can say that I am running because there is no coach in the national team, because I do not have a job, I know that I am not the only one, maybe I am not involved in this process and I am aware of what happened,” he said.
Herrera elaborated that his departure was not athletic, so his number in the Mexican team would have made him a creditor for the position.
“There is a natural revenge, I didn’t follow the result, I delivered the results that were asked of me, it seems to me that I did everything well, not better than many, but I did everything well, like everyone who was eliminated in the 1/8 finals, but among the 78 best coaches here I am. I went in as a bomber, then a process started where I think we could do something better,” he explained.
Miguel Herrera led El Tri for two years from 2013 to 2015. During his tenure, he had 20 wins, 11 draws and seven losses. He left the quota to score 71 goals in favor and 36 against. He managed to become the CONCACAF champion and reach the 1/8 finals against the Netherlands at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.
His departure was linked to an airport attack on journalist Christian Martinoli, whom he mentioned in his last conversation with TUDN and said he would have no relationship with him. “I fought a human, I fought Martinoli, there is no good chemistry and there never will be, (but) I have never fought a medium,” he said.
