Olympic champion in speed skating and State Duma deputy Svetlana Zhurova commented in an interview with CAS decision regarding Russian figure skater Kamila Valieva.

“I understand that in such cases, if the policy was not included, then most athletes in this situation were justified. Because it is clear that a microdose enters the athlete’s body, most likely by accident due to some kind of negligence. personnel”, Zhurova noted.

According to her, in the anti-doping rules there is a concept when an athlete has intentionally used doping. The deputy stressed that Valieva herself could not use doping to improve the result.

“Valiyeva served her sentence for this period, because she was suspended and did not speak. But there is a nuance. If that were the case, we would have heard that Kamila was acquitted. But the gold medal at the Olympics is at stake,” added the athlete.

Zhurova stressed that in this case, politics and pressure on the arbitrators in court, who deal with the figure skater’s case, are already interfering. The deputy noted that athletes from countries who really want to get this medal are at stake, and so that Russia does not get it.

Doping scandal Valieva at the Olympics

Recall that Valieva was at the center of a doping scandal at the Olympic Games. On the day the Russian national team was awarded medals for winning the team tournament, a message came that the skater had a positive doping test. It is noteworthy that a positive sample was taken not at the Olympics, but at the Russian Championship that took place back in December 2021. All samples of Valieva in Beijing itself were absolutely “clean”.

It turned out that after the Russian championship, RUSADA sent tests to the Stockholm laboratory for verification. There, the processing of the doping test was delayed in every possible way, explaining this by the fact that many employees are in quarantine. At the same time, after the Czech Republic, Valieva managed to perform at the European Championship, which she won. There were also no problems with her doping tests at the European Championship.

Some experts pointed out the oddity that a positive result from the tournament, which took place a month and a half before the Olympics, came neatly to the end of the team tournament, in which Russia won an unconditional victory.

After the athlete became aware of the test, Valieva, who at that time was 15 years old, had to endure a real drama: at first they refused to allow her to the personal tournament, then the decision was protested, her appeal was considered. Each official training ended for the Russian woman with interrogations from the foreign press. The special CAS panel nevertheless allowed the skater to the personal tournament.

But the serious pressure that these days was exerted on Valieva made itself felt. A serious blow was the fact that the ISU announced that in the event of Valieva’s victory, it would not hold the awarding of the winner and prize-winners at all. The Russian was initially considered the favorite of the tournament. In the short program, she took the lead, but skated the program with blots and was ahead of her compatriot Anna Shcherbakova by a small number of points. In the free program, Valieva made a number of serious mistakes and blots, slipping to the final fourth position.

Another Russian woman managed to become the Olympic champion – Anna Shcherbakova, who showed two clean skates in Beijing. Alexandra Trusova set a record for the number of quadruple jumps in one program (for the first time in history in women’s singles she performed five such jumps), which managed to climb from fourth place after a short program to second final place. At the same time, Trusova was extremely upset that she failed to win the gold medal.

Bronze went to Japanese figure skater Kaori Sakomoto.
