This Friday, May 12, debuts Euri Perez, the No. 1 player from the Dominican Republic for the Miami Marlins and No. 3 in the Major Leagues.With. The 20-year-old will face the Cincinnati Reds for the first time at Loan Depot Park in Miami.
The pitcher received word that he would be moving to the majors from the Double-A class on Wednesday. Sandy Alcantara, Cy Young of the National League, notified him via video link.
“I have bad news for you,” Alcantara said. “Now I have to see your face every day. My brother, do you think you’re ready to play in the big leagues? I’m very happy for you. He deserved this opportunity. See you soon here. You are loved,” Alcantara said to his compatriot.
Perez will become the youngest Miami Marlins player to make a major debut at 20 years and 13 days old. The Dominican will surpass the late Jose Fernandez, who also debuted at 20 years and 250 days in 2013. Fernandez died in a boat in 2016.
He will also be the second youngest behind Mexican southpaw Julio Urias, who did so at age 19 with the Miami Marlins.
Euri Pérez numbers in the minor leagues
This season, Perez competed in Pensacola’s Double-A class. There he posted 3 wins, 1 loss and a 2.32 ERA.
In his last 4 starts, the Dominican has allowed 5 runs, walked 5 and hit a total of 30 batters in 22 innings of work.
“Our number one prospect has a bright future. Huge talent. We are looking forward to when he will climb the embankment. It will be a very exciting moment for the organization as it passes through this club and for us too,” said Skip Schumacher, team manager.
With this pitcher, the Marlins will have 4 Latino pitchers in the rotation: Dominicans Sandy Alcantara and Edward Cabrera, Venezuelan Jesús Lusardo, and now Euri Perez.
“I think when you see him he throws all his pitches on strike, he commands his pitches and that’s something you want to make sure he can do before he gets there. He showed it, so we’re glad he moved up,” said Kim Ng, general manager of the Marlins.
