Official Euro 7: strict standard valid for cars from July 2025 November 10, 2022 249

There European Commission today submitted a proposal to define Euro 7 standard to reduce emissions of pollutants by road transport and, in general, by road transport – the main source of air pollution in urban areas. The goal is to reach the level zero emissions as required by the European Green Deal”while keeping cars affordable for consumers and contributing to Europe’s competitiveness“.

A PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED EVEN AFTER 2035

The Commission explains that with the new standard they will drive on European roads. less polluting cars, vans, trucks and buses and air quality and our health will benefit.

The proposal concerns emissions from exhaust pipes, as well as from brakes and tires. It also contributes to the new stricter air quality standards proposed by the Commission on October 26, 2022.

Euro 7 will reduce road vehicle pollution, which will inevitably become a problem even after 2035 when all cars and vans sold in the European Union will be zero CO2 emissions. The Commission estimates that in 2050, one in five cars and more than half of trucks will still emit pollutants from the tailpipe. “Electric vehicles also cause pollution from brakes and microplastics released from tires.“.

Commission proposal it will now go to the European Parliament and the Council for final and subsequent approval Adoption by member countries.

WHAT’S HAPPENING TO EURO 7
  • What is changing: Euro 7 replaces and simplifies emission regulations for cars and vans (Euro 6) and trucks and buses (Euro VI).
  • What means: light (cars and vans) and heavy (buses and trucks) sold in the European Union.
  • Gasoline only? no, not even diesel, electric, fuel or alternative fuel
  • Because: willingness to adopt stricter emission control standards
  • What emissions: prescribed by Euro 6/VI, i.e. NOx, CO, particulate matter, hydrocarbons, methane, ammonia (trucks and buses) + ammonia from cars and trucks, formaldehyde, nitrous oxide from buses and trucks + ultrafine particles from brakes + microplastics from tires + battery life
  • How: through sensors inside the car
  • Goals: By 2035, Euro 7 will reduce NOx emissions by 35% compared to Euro 6 and by 56% compared to Euro 6. The amount of particulate matter in the exhaust pipes of cars and vans will be reduced by 13%, and in buses and trucks by 39%, and the amount of particulate matter in the brakes by 27%.
  • When: July 1, 2025 for cars and vans.July 1, 2027 for trucks and buses
  • How much does it cost the consumer: from 90 to 150 euros for cars and minibuses, 2700 euros for buses and trucks. These are estimates, of course. But there will also be benefits, such as a higher resale value of the car.

AREAS OF USE

  • better emission control all new vehicles by expanding the range of driving conditions. For example, consumption up to 45°C will also be taken into account for short distances traveled by commuters.
  • tightening emission limits. New pollutants such as nitrous oxide for heavy vehicles are now included in the calculation.
  • brakes and tires: brake and tire emission limits for all vehicles, including electric
  • follow the rules longer: Compliance for cars and vans up to 200,000 km and 10 years old is double what it is now.
  • promoting the spread of electric vehicles battery life regulation to increase consumer confidence
  • digital opportunities: Euro 7 guarantees that vehicles will not be tampered with, emissions will be monitored by sensors inside the vehicle.
FIRST HOT REACTIONS
  • Ford:”this proposal risks undermining the great progress made by Europe towards electric mobility. […] We should not divert resources to yesterday’s technologies, investing in zero emissions instead.
  • ASEA:”euro 7 advantage is very limited“.Dates 2025 and 2027”unreal
  • Transport and environment: new standards”surprisingly weak“.
