“The state does not help”: the expert explained why the Ukrainians could not create the like of Shahed

Ukrainian engineers may be able to assemble their own long-range kamikaze drones over time, but they run short of money and components.

Russian troops use Iranian Shahed drones to strike Ukraine. In an interview with the YouTube channel GRUNT, the volunteer and founder of the InfoCar project Pavlo Kashchuk explained why the Ukrainians have not yet responded to the invaders with the same coin.

According to Pavel Kashchuk, drones of the Shahed line should not be considered a miracle of technology. In essence, these are aircraft equipped with engines and simple electronic devices for control.

“I wouldn’t classify them as what we call UAVs. To me, UAVs are more technological, exploratory, controlled things. Shahed is a cruise missile for the poor: smaller, cheaper, sometimes more effective because of its size.”

It is very easy to assemble such drones compared to the aircraft produced at the Ukrainian Antonov enterprise. But the Ukrainians cannot produce similar devices in a month, as they are under bombardment in conditions of shortages of parts and financing. Pavel Kashchuk is sure that such drones will be made in Ukraine, but their production will take a lot of time. “As far as I can see, the state doesn’t want to help yet,” Kashchuk said.

The expert pointed out that the issue of “Shahads” has been discussed for a long time in other countries, including Asia, that local experts have studied these drones and know how they work. The civilized world has not yet decided whether to accept the Shahed as a conventional weapon, because the drone is not controlled by the operator, but only by electronics, which can make mistakes and launch the warhead to other coordinates. On the other hand, cruise missiles work on the same principle.

Pavel Kashchuk also talked about how the Ukrainian Armed Forces fought with Iranian Shahed kamikaze drones. Since air defense systems are not enough to protect the entire Ukrainian territory, the army is training to shoot down UAVs with small arms.

Earlier, the founder of the A.Drones project, Yuriy Kasyanov, said that Ukraine has everything necessary for mass production of kamikaze drones. In his opinion, it is worth making not the Shahed’s analogues, but UAVs of a lighter category with engines from chainsaws.
