Scholars suggest that several events preceded this dramatic scenario. First, the culprits are invasive species brought here by US troops during WWII. Secondly, the situation has worsened due to a number of other dangerous plant species and serious natural disasters. As a result, the vines literally suffocate any other flora that has no chance to compete.
Note that climatologists have long predicted that climate change will lead to more intense storms such as tropical cyclones. And so it happened – since the 80s, scientists have observed an increase in the intensity and number of storms.
But now researchers believe we’re seeing another effect of planetary instability in Vanua Levu – nature literally spiraling out of control. As a result, kudzu, a liana from the morning glory family, literally swallows whole tree crowns at a distance of several kilometers. In addition, other similar species such as Merremia peltata, which have only become invasive in the last few years due to the increasing intensity of tropical cyclones, are making the situation worse.
Locals struggle to clear the paths of the sneaky vine, but growing plants here gets harder and harder each year.
Meanwhile, researchers have found some minor pros to the situation. On the contrary, although they were found by local residents – they learned to use one of the types of vine as a rope and actively use them in trade.
