The European Union has created a cyber lab in Ukraine for the Ukrainian Armed Forces: why do Ukrainians need it?

Equipment and software were delivered to Ukraine to better prepare for new Russian cyberattacks.

The European Union opened a cyber defense laboratory in Kiev on December 2 to be used by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Details of the project on the official website were reported by the European External Action Service.

EU leadership used the European Peace Fund to purchase and ship to Ukraine the equipment, software and protection tools needed to open a cybernetics lab. It is designed to strengthen the cyber defense of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, that is, to timely detect attempts to hack information systems, prevent and repel cyber attacks.

A cyber lab is a learning and research environment made up of various virtual and physical components. The technologies presented in it allow users to create a realistic virtual environment to simulate protection in real time. In addition, the laboratory will become a training area where new military cybersecurity experts will be trained and the skills of experienced experts will be developed. The EU is confident that thanks to these efforts, Ukrainians will be able to combat hackers faster and more effectively in the near future.

“In a simulated network, representatives of the Ukrainian Armed Forces can learn to cope with high levels of stress by discovering and investigating vulnerabilities in various network systems. CyberLab and improved network security help the Ukrainian military improve its capabilities to detect, monitor and counter cyberattacks,” press release notes.

It is worth remembering that on 15 December 2021, the EU allocated to Ukraine 31 million euros from the European Peace Fund. They decided to spend part of the funds on the protection of virtual networks, namely on the software and hardware of the Communications and Cybersecurity Command of Ukraine.

Earlier, cybersecurity expert Konstantin Korsun complained that there is still no cyber unit in the Ukrainian Armed Forces. By this word, he refers to military units that perform specific tasks, have a single command, a clear structure, hierarchy, and established systems of coordination and financing.

In September, Andriy Baranovich, co-founder of the NGO “Cyber Alliance of Ukraine”, warned that Russian hackers are preparing for Ukraine. According to him, in January, Russian special services carried out cyberattacks to cause panic among Ukrainians, but for several reasons did not have the desired effect. Now that the Ukrainian authorities have failed to learn from and correct their mistakes, the Russians can now reclaim wasted resources and repeat maneuvers.
