Scientists have found a way to protect windows from fogging: “louvers” made of titanium and gold will help

The researchers developed a special coating that heats the glass up to 8°C and prevents fogging.

Anyone who has ever worn glasses knows that in cold weather glasses tend to fog up – we can’t see anything as a result. However, The Guardian writes that Swiss researchers seem to have found a way to solve this problem.

A group of researchers led by professors Dimos Poulikakos and Thomas Stutzius from the ETH Zurich research institute in Switzerland developed fog glasses as their basis. Scientists have developed a special coating that prevents the formation of condensation on the glass surface – by the way, it is assumed that it can be used not only for windows, but also, for example, for the windshield of a car.

These sprays are not uncommon in principle, they usually work by coating the surface with molecules that attract water to make it smooth and transparent. But the new coating works a little differently.

According to the researchers, it can absorb infrared radiation from the sun and use it to heat the surface of glass by up to 8°C. In other words, the new coating actually prevents the formation of condensation.

According to Poulikakos, the coating is made of gold sandwiched between two layers of titanium oxide and is 12 times thinner than gold leaf. The researchers note that because these are nanoparticles, the material costs of producing the coating are low, but they are also considering cheaper materials that can be used in production.
