As we know, Stellantis isn’t just about electric cars. Indeed, the Group also works hydrogen technology for use primarily on commercial vehicles. In recent months we have witnessed, for example, the debut of models such as the Opel Vivaro-e Hydrogen.
We also recall that the strategic plan Give Forward 2030 envisages expanding the offer of hydrogen vehicles to large vans starting in 2024 in Europe and 2025 in the United States, and exploring further opportunities in the heavy-duty vehicle sector.
Now Stellantis is taking its hydrogen strategy one step further by announcing readiness to enter the Symbio joint venture through purchase, emphasizes the Group, “significant shareholding“.
If negotiations go through, Stellantis will go to support the current shareholders of Faurecia and Michelin. Symbio, we recall, is a company specializing in the hydrogen sector. and in fuel cell technologies. In 2022, this reality introduced the HyMotive project, which aims to increase the production capacity of fuel cell systems to 100,000 units per year by 2028 at its factories in France. A project that will also create 1,000 new jobs in France.
Entering the joint venture will allow Stellantis to accelerate its hydrogen strategy. Right, Carlos TavaresCEO of Stellantis, commented:
The Symbio roadmap is technically in perfect alignment with Stellantis’ plans for hydrogen mobility in Europe and the US. This move will accelerate the development of this technology, allowing us to offer our customers new low-emission products in addition to traditional electric vehicles. We are grateful to the Faurecia, Michelin and Symbio teams for their commitment to innovation, excellence and collaboration; we are all working towards the goal of carbon-free mobility.
The transaction is expected to close in early 2023 and is subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approval.
