An international team of scientists has created a new reconstruction of the face of the famous Catholic saint, whose name is Anthony of Padua. He lived in the 13th century and, according to scientists, had a very large head, writes Live Science.

Saint Anthony of Padua, born Fernando de Bouillon, was born in Lisbon, Portugal in 1195 and died in Padua, Italy in 1231. Anthony of Padua is considered the patron of both Lisbon and Padua, as well as the patron of the poor and travellers. He is also approached by Catholic believers to help them return lost or stolen items.

Using CT scans of this saint’s skull, a team of scientists has created an incredibly realistic reconstruction of his face and appearance.

Considered to be a member of the Catholic Order of the Franciscans, this saint is depicted in the corresponding brown robes worn by members of this monastic order. As for the hairstyle, medieval Franciscan monks also had such an appearance.

In this depiction of the saint, he is facing the viewer to appear as believable as possible. The author of the new reconstruction of the view was a group of scientists led by Brazilian graphic artist Cicero Moraes, who specializes in recreating the faces of long-dead people.

This work was a continuation of work in 2014 where Italian scientists created the first such reconstruction using only a digital copy of the priest’s skull. Then Moraes also helped them.

“This facial reconstruction is a better version of what was created 8 years ago. New technologies have made it possible to more accurately reproduce all the anatomical features of the saint, and we believe this is the most realistic image of him,” says Moraes.

The scientists also noted that Anthony of Padua had a very large skull compared to the average adult male, meaning he only had a very large head. And it was much larger than that of modern humans.

This reconstruction of the saint’s appearance was made by Pope Pope II. It was made possible thanks to the exhumation of the body of Anthony of Padua, initiated by John Paul.
