A startup called The Ice Guys is raising funds for an interesting solution to the problem that battles plastic straws while keeping drinks cold.
While far from being the only villain in the story, plastic straws are emblematic of the wasteful use of single-use plastic. They are used for just a few minutes and then thrown away and then spend the next millennium in a dumpster or ocean where they can harm wildlife. There are many alternative materials such as stainless steel, aluminum and silicone, but these are difficult to clean or affect the taste of beverages. And the paper straws quickly get wet and become simply tasteless in appearance.
That’s where the Icemen come in and offer a simple solution that no one has thought of before: making a straw from ice. The humble name Ice Straws is enough to finish off your drink without leaving any waste, but it also provides the benefit of cooling.
The frosted straw is a silicone mold that can be filled with water and frozen in 30-45 minutes to make a ready-to-use straw.
They come in three sizes for different types of beverages: The classic is 220mm long and has a 5mm hole. The cocktail has the same opening width but is only 140mm long, allowing you to drink from shorter cocktail glasses. And the Boba is a thicker version of the Classic, with its 12mm wide opening allowing you to swallow bubbles from your bubble tea.
Of course, we may be concerned that the straw itself will melt too quickly. But Ice Guys is reassuring because you can pre-freeze a few pieces, take them out of the mold, and store them in the freezer so you can take them out and use them at the right time. It’s also not necessary to make them out of water, because you can try and use juice, soft drink or anything else you like.
Ice Guys is now seeking funding for Ice Straw on Kickstarter, which has raised its modest $5,000 goal sevenfold with more than a month to go. Quantities start at $19 for a single shape or $39 for a pack of three in any of three sizes. If all goes according to plan, shipping should begin in May 2023, just in time for the start of summer in the Northern Hemisphere.
